Sour Dough

First off, if anyone took offence at my last post, Bless Your Heart. I know it must be hard living in a world that frightens you so much you have to narrow everything down to black and white. The reality is it’s all kind of gray. I tend to see things as good and not so good, life goes on none the less. And life is a wonderful thing to have. Enough said.

I inadvertently made a sour dough starter today. Well, not TODAY, it’s more like over this past week. On Sunday I made jumbalia, great dish. Anyway, I had a couple of loaves of bread dough in the freezer so I figured I’d defrost one and bake a loaf to go along with the meal. As usual I got busy doing lord knows what else and forgot about the dough. The following morning while doing the dishes I realize not only did I forget about the bread dough, but I also left it on the counter all night. I looked at it and it seemed pretty dead. But I was in a hurry to get to work so I figured I’d throw it out when I came home. Guess what, I forgot.

Come Tuesday morning I go to throw out the dead dough, and low and behold, the stuff is still alive! So I add some sugar and a cup of flour, kneed it in, put it back in the bowl. Thought I would bake it that evening. WRONG!!! I forgot again! I call this some timers. Now it’s Saturday morning. I go in to clean up the kitchen. I live with two males, one works at home, my “other quarter,” the other is my 20 year old son. Neither one can even remember to empty the trash, (that one has to be a whole other post,) let alone clean up the kitchen. Once again I notice this bread dough and it’s still alive!!!

So I add two more cups of flour and two teaspoons of sugar. By now I have a bit of liquid floating around the dough; I think this is referred to as hooch. Then I think maybe I should go on line and make sure I’m not getting ready to poison us all. Long story short, I now have a sour dough starter.
It’s rising in a loaf right now; I’ll let you know how it comes out.
