project day

I feel a little nip in the air this morning. What a nice change from the sweltering heat of a week ago. I must confess though I enjoy the reprieve I recognize this little nip as the first sign of the winter to come. I’m not a winter person. Actually, in my world there are only two seasons, winter and summer. Autumn and spring aren’t long enough for me to pay much attention.

Today is project day. I’m going to be making what I call canvases. Actually, since I prefer to paint on wood I make my canvases out of wood. I used to take a large sheet of thin furniture grade plywood and cut it to whatever size met my fancy at the moment. I’d paint on the wood and then pop it into a frame which I would build to match. The thing is I don’t have an actual workshop so I have to work outside. This can be a drag. Now I’ve started mounting the wood on a frame and I just paint right around the frame. That way the piece is wall ready. It’s gotten to the point where I do so many paintings that I can’t keep up doing it the other way.

Right now I’m working on a body of paintings that are all going to be 36x48, mixed media. I have three finished and 7 to finish by end of October. This is going to be a busy month. On top of that, I need to make enough canvases to get me through the winter. I’ve finished about 17 paintings this year so I had better get busy. As a last resort I can always go buy actual canvases but I don’t like working on canvas at all. Besides the larger ones cost a fortune.

Gotta go, my saw and glue await me.
